A Mother’s Day Idea I Didn’t Expect to Love

April 4, 2026

A few years ago, my sister suggested we try a different Mother’s Day Idea.

Instead of the usual brunch or dinner, she booked a candle-making experience for the three of us. My mom, my sister, and me.

If I’m being honest, I wasn’t exactly sold on the idea at first.

Candle making didn’t really sound like my thing.

But she found this cute place in Philly called Wax + Wine and so I went along with it.

Looking back, it ended up being one of the best Mother’s Day ideas we’ve had.

What I Didn’t Expect

I assumed candle making would be simple. Pick a scent, pour some wax, and that’s it.

That’s not how it played out.

We spent time going through different scent categories, testing combinations, figuring out what actually worked together.

Somewhere along the way, I got pulled into it.

Trying to build the right blend.
Comparing what I made to what my sister and my mom were creating.

There was even a little bit of competition. I definitely wanted mine to turn out better than theirs.

I didn’t expect to care that much.

But I did.

The Part That Stuck With Me

What really stood out wasn’t just the activity.

It was the pace.

There was enough structure to keep things moving, but also enough downtime to just sit and talk.

No one was rushing.
No one was distracted.

It gave us time to actually be together in a way that doesn’t always happen.

That’s what made it memorable.

Why I Kept Going Back

After that first experience, I ended up going back more than I expected.

I took my wife for a date night.
My mother-in-law and I went when she was in town.

All in, I went four or five times that year.

Each time felt a little different depending on who I was with.

But the pattern was always the same.

You go in thinking about the activity.

You leave remembering the time you spent together.

Why It Works for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day doesn’t need to be complicated.

But it should feel intentional.

Experiences like this work because they give you:

  • time together
  • something to do
  • a shared memory at the end

It’s not just another reservation.

It actually feels like you did something together.

Plan Your Mother’s Day

If you’re thinking about what to do this year, it’s worth considering something a little different.

A candle-making experience is simple, but it gives you the kind of time together that people actually remember.
