A Candle for Emma with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)

December 31, 2024

As 2024 comes to a close, we look back on the year thankful for the connections we made in our community. It’s been a joy to be a place “Where Friends Gather” and we’ve had fun hosting so many candle making experiences with our guests.

One we are particularly thankful for is the connection we made with Emma earlier this year. Emma, a 12-year-old from Greenville, SC, entered our community by way of her treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Emma and her mom, Lauren, visited our store in Center City to make some candles during one of their visits to Philadelphia.

We had a chance to learn about Emma’s story. How in July 2023, she fell ill during a tennis camp in Philadelphia and was taken to CHOP where Dr. Mittal diagnosed an obstructed kidney requiring surgery. Despite being far from home, Emma’s care continued at CHOP and Dr. Mittal’s team successfully corrected Emma’s rotated kidney through robotic surgery. Now, more than a year later, Emma is thriving! The impact that CHOP has on our community, and on patients throughout the world, is one of the reasons we love supporting their mission. CHOP has been providing top-tier care to children just like Emma since 1855!

We created a candle in honor of Emma’s story, Emma’s Journey, and this partnership with CHOP and with Emma helped us raise over $2,000 that we were able to donate to CHOP this year. A big thank you to Emma for sharing her story, and to CHOP for all they work they do here in Philadelphia. We look forward to what 2025 has in store. Happy New Year!
